Strive Masiyiwa at the 2018 Global Leadership Summit

Dan Sullivan · August 3, 2019 ·

Here are my notes from his talk at the 2018 global leadership Summit. There is so much going on in Africa that the rest of the world needs to pay attention to and learn from.

I love his philosophy that if your business solves the problem people will seek you out. He wasn’t passionate about cell phones or education, he just wanted to solve problems.

How about that last line for employee appreciation?

Respect, with reverence, the people that work for us – especially volunteers. They could all go elsewhere to work toward someone else’s vision.

T.D. Jakes Talk at the 2018 Global Leadership Summit

Dan Sullivan · September 6, 2018 ·

Whenever T.D. Jakes speaks at the Global Leadership Summit, I get excited. I’m not sure I can tolerate listening to sermons or church from him, but I do really enjoy his talks at the GLS for some reason.

T.D. Jakes at 2018 Global leadership Summit notes

He was inspiring, that is for sure. I especially liked what he said about Kentucky Fried Chicken starting in the right time and the right place. KFC would never get started now. It started so strong when it did because people loved it when their moms cooked chicken but the moms were all going to work. The moms and dads loved it and the kids did too.

The Wright brothers deal was strong too. There are things that are too awesome for the people or the setting in which they start. Like my coffee backpack! It was so awesome!

The general point is to be passionate about something and then find ways to act on that passion. Assuming it is a passion that is led by the Lord and inspired by advancing the Kingdom of Heaven, that is right on. Find the thing that God has called you to do and then work at it with all of your heart!

Juliet Funt 2018 Global Leadership Summit Talk

Dan Sullivan · August 30, 2018 ·

Here are my notes from Juliet Funt speaking at the 2018 GLS. I think her best point was the Yellow list for delayed communication. Like Seth Godin saying the best email writing software is Notepad.exe. There are things that you feel like saying that aren’t always the best thing to say. After a bit, you’ll be able to say it better.

You can tell from my notes when someone’s talk is more story-based. She told a lot of neat stories that distracted me from taking notes. I totally forget what the point of the girl on candid camera was all about, but it was funny.

Angela Ahrendts Interview at the 2018 Global Leadership Summit

Dan Sullivan · August 23, 2018 ·

Here are the notes from the Angela Ahrendts interview at the 2018 Global Leadership Summit. She was interviewed by John C. Maxwell, which added his own colors to the conversation. She manages 66,000 people in Apple Retail space and a lot of the dialog they had that I didn’t catch was about the way they have a feedback system for Apple store employees to communicate up the ladder.

Here is her profile on LinkedIn

After the notes I have her TEDx talk on human connections.

Craig Groschel – WCAGLS – 2015

Dan Sullivan · August 31, 2015 ·

This is the last talk of the whole summit, and his 5 points were a great way to look at next steps from all of this stuff.
I’ll forgive the cheesiness of him forcing them to be 5 C words. They weren’t even, and that stuff always comes across dumb to me, but the points were good either way.

5 ways to increase your capacity as a leader:

  1. Confidence
  2. Connections
  3. Competence (hilarious that in my *Incompetence* I misspelled that word!)
  4. Character
  5. Commitment

Sam Adeyemi – WCAGLS – 2015

Dan Sullivan · August 28, 2015 ·

This was a really good talk. A lot of what he talked about applies in my neighborhood in Evansville too.

Brian Houston – WCAGLS 2015

Dan Sullivan · August 27, 2015 ·

There was so much good in this talk. You can see some of it in my notes.

This business of picking an anthem for conflicts is so true. I’ll never forget singing “Some Nights” by .Fun on my way home from listening to a preacher every night at an event that was so wrong. Or “I have always loved you” by Third Day the summer I was discerning and preparing to propose to my wife. I should also mention “It’s On” by Superchic[k] the year I was a freelancer. So many anthems. This stuff about songs and relationships is absolutely true when it comes to our relationship with God too.

I found my private space at the end of Franklin Street at the pizza king. It wasn’t the same as a stained glass church, but it was a semi-private spot to get these thoughts together.

Sheila Heen – WCAGLS 2015

Dan Sullivan · August 25, 2015 ·

Here are my notes from Sheila Heen’s talk at the Willow Creek Global Leadership Summit. She was really good. The even better part of this whole talk was that I was getting my semi-annual review at work right as I was putting the notes together! At the end she said some things about how we really see ourselves in the feedback from others, and that as a community of people we need that. Her book is here and after you read my notes you should go check it out.

Ed Catmull – WCAGLS 2015

Dan Sullivan · August 11, 2015 ·

This was from an interview Bill Hybels did with Ed Catmull, boss of Disney Animation Studios and co-founder of Pixar.

Two takeaways I got from this was that he saw the deeper cause and motive behind just making movies and a lot of money. That made me wonder about the deeper cause behind me working at Lieberman. Am I just making websites or am I doing something different? Later in the day I caught myself when someone said “What do you do?” and I said “I help people get their business on the internet.” AAAAH! It’s happening!

The other part of his talk that was good was how much he talked about teaching the principles of their company and their work philosophy. Sure, people need to know how to render lighting and keyframe the polygons, but they can learn that their own way, what he was concerned about was teaching the culture of creativity and flexibility and trust that will then turn out amazing movies.
