Craig Groschel Opening Talk at GLS 2022

Dan Sullivan · August 6, 2022 ·

Here are my notes from the opening of the Global Leadership Summit 2022. It was a good talk and a lot of the things he mentioned came up from other speakers throughout the next 2 days. Particularly the paradoxes. There were other speakers that either exemplified or talked about things like being confident and humble, direct and kind, or empowering and controlling.

At the end he asked people to stand to show which one of the 3 we wanted to work on the most. I felt stupid standing up in a room of 540 people to say I wanted to work on being humble. I stood during the 3rd choice because that was the one that resonated with me the least. If I get the Confident and Humble points, and the Driven and Healthy sounds relatable, maybe the Focused and Flexible is the one I need to improve in.

My nametag listed “Various” as my organization, so some FOCUS would be good!

Christ in Our Flesh and His

Dan Sullivan · December 20, 2019 ·

I love the way this was put:

Jesus clothed Himself with us. He put on flesh and died, then put on our flesh and lives!

Mark Weever

I love the way Mark put this. It’s true. Jesus was God in the flesh. He came and lived a life that every one of us lives, except He lived the 0 A.D. version. Hebrews says He was tempted in every single way that we are tempted. That doesn’t mean He thought about looking at things on the Internet or had an easy and secret way to cheat on His taxes.

It means that when Jesus was here, He could do just the same thing Adam did and that all of us have done. He could have ignored God and lived by His own will.

Instead, He gave up His own will and lived for the Father’s will. That will sent Jesus to the cross for all of the rest of us.

Strive Masiyiwa at the 2018 Global Leadership Summit

Dan Sullivan · August 3, 2019 ·

Here are my notes from his talk at the 2018 global leadership Summit. There is so much going on in Africa that the rest of the world needs to pay attention to and learn from.

I love his philosophy that if your business solves the problem people will seek you out. He wasn’t passionate about cell phones or education, he just wanted to solve problems.

Strive Masiyiwa notes page 3

How about that last line for employee appreciation?

Respect, with reverence, the people that work for us – especially volunteers. They could all go elsewhere to work toward someone else’s vision.

T.D. Jakes Talk at the 2018 Global Leadership Summit

Dan Sullivan · September 6, 2018 ·

Whenever T.D. Jakes speaks at the Global Leadership Summit, I get excited. I’m not sure I can tolerate listening to sermons or church from him, but I do really enjoy his talks at the GLS for some reason.

T.D. Jakes at 2018 Global leadership Summit notes

He was inspiring, that is for sure. I especially liked what he said about Kentucky Fried Chicken starting in the right time and the right place. KFC would never get started now. It started so strong when it did because people loved it when their moms cooked chicken but the moms were all going to work. The moms and dads loved it and the kids did too.

The Wright brothers deal was strong too. There are things that are too awesome for the people or the setting in which they start. Like my coffee backpack! It was so awesome!

The general point is to be passionate about something and then find ways to act on that passion. Assuming it is a passion that is led by the Lord and inspired by advancing the Kingdom of Heaven, that is right on. Find the thing that God has called you to do and then work at it with all of your heart!

Juliet Funt 2018 Global Leadership Summit Talk

Dan Sullivan · August 30, 2018 ·

Here are my notes from Juliet Funt speaking at the 2018 GLS. I think her best point was the Yellow list for delayed communication. Like Seth Godin saying the best email writing software is Notepad.exe. There are things that you feel like saying that aren’t always the best thing to say. After a bit, you’ll be able to say it better.

You can tell from my notes when someone’s talk is more story-based. She told a lot of neat stories that distracted me from taking notes. I totally forget what the point of the girl on candid camera was all about, but it was funny.

Angela Ahrendts Interview at the 2018 Global Leadership Summit

Dan Sullivan · August 23, 2018 ·

Here are the notes from the Angela Ahrendts interview at the 2018 Global Leadership Summit. She was interviewed by John C. Maxwell, which added his own colors to the conversation. She manages 66,000 people in Apple Retail space and a lot of the dialog they had that I didn’t catch was about the way they have a feedback system for Apple store employees to communicate up the ladder.

Here is her profile on LinkedIn

After the notes I have her TEDx talk on human connections.

Craig Groeschel Opening Talk at the 2018 Global Leadership Summit

Dan Sullivan · August 16, 2018 ·

Here are my notes from Craig Groeschel’s opening talk at the Global Leadership Summit (GLS 2018).

The opening addressed the Hybels scandal directly and I thought a lot of what he said about it was good. Nobody can accuse them of not addressing the issue as fully as it needed to be addressed at this event. At the same time, they moved on to the business of the day and didn’t dwell on failures of the past.

Craig Groschel GLS 2018 Notes

Yes, I’m convinced Craig Groeschel has three lungs. In the next 2 days, profound humility and furious resolve would come up a few more times. The line after the first few notes here is where he turned a corner and began his actual talk. Before that was intro.

That whole concept of

I notice.

You matter.

Is so relatable. Every part of any job I didn’t like could come back to those 2 traits lacking.

So many good notes on this page. The trick is that I’m not typically the leader that is the bottleneck – I’ve worked for the leaders that were the bottlenecks. Hopefully, I’ll learn from the good ones instead.

The Grander Vision #1 piece was amazing. A judge is viewing arrested prostitutes as sex trafficking victims and started a program to treat them as such.

Doing Life in Groups and Teams

Dan Sullivan · August 3, 2017 ·

at onelife we do life in groups and teams

Ecclesiology is as much about what you don’t say as what you say. This is something they say a lot at One Life:

At One Life we do life in groups and teams.

Not to speak for One Life, but I want to offer my own commentary on this. This is one 2017 paradigm of

Acts 2:42-47

[42] And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. [43] And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. [44] And all who believed were together and had all things in common. [45] And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. [46] And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, [47] praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. (ESV)

When they say that life happens on groups and teams, they are saying that it isn’t dependent on the Sunday morning church service. The Sunday morning thing is a thing, and many of the teams are teams because of the Sunday morning thing, but if you talk to the people in the best of teams you’ll find out that they grow up into something much bigger than volunteer group.

The job or activity is just a framework to be together. Where the real Acts 2:42-46 part happens is when the group breaks out of just serving coffee on Sunday and turns into people playing volleyball together on a Tuesday night. When we structure our lives around time spent with people instead of things, our life is enhanced. That’s when our family life is the happiest and the most balanced: when we are spending time in the community of The Church.

I need to disclose here, that my family is part of the People of Praise, so we do community bigger and badder than a lot of people, but that is just part of our way of life.

In the Sunday morning church service, you are going to get some singing and some teaching, but if that is the full Christian Community experience for you, you are missing out. Joining with other people, changing your schedule and prioritizing deliberate time with Christian people, will change your life.

I used to have people over and they’d ask “Is this a Bible study?” my answer was that it was whatever we made it. If our hearts overflowed with YouTube videos and complaints about work, that’s what it would be. If our hearts overflowed with cool stuff we read in the Bible this week, then it would be that. Both are OK. We are free in Christ to talk about whatever. But there are some things that are going to grow us more than others.

best thing you can give your team: honest transparency

The more we share together, the more we live life. Life in abundance is an overflow of everything that life is. Pain, suffering, joy, victory, you name it. If you want to up your game and have a richer, fuller life, do it. Adjust your schedule, cancel and quit the shallow stuff. Spend time with the people you want to be more like, and watch God show off and add to your number daily those that are also being saved.

Phinehas Son of Eleazar – Not a Chaplain

Dan Sullivan · May 22, 2017 ·

A couple of years ago, I tried to fill a little notebook with one Bible thought per day. I found it recently and there are some pages empty, so I’m backfilling them. Here is one today from Numbers 31:6 about Phinehas.

The People of God: A Praise Factory

Dan Sullivan · March 7, 2017 ·

What if we considered ourselves a praise factory? What if the Church was a factory for God’s praise? When we praise God, we celebrate His person, presence, and actions. One Hebrew word for this is Halal, which means to shine and boast, all in one.

How do you like that? We are a factory for shining the boasts of God. Or maybe we are the shining boasts of God?

we were made to worship God together

How about that sentence: “Unity and Praise are constitutive?” As in part of what makes us Christians, what makes us the people of God, is our unity together as we praise the one true and living God?

This comment was great “Praise and worship is like we all bring our faith and dump it together in a pot.” That is the truth. When we come together to sing songs to God, or to pray and give Him glory, it makes a better thing than if we only did it by ourselves in isolation.
