We Can’t Reach Something We Are Afraid to Touch

Dan Sullivan · September 27, 2016 ·

[13] He went out again beside the sea, and all the crowd was coming to him, and he was teaching them. [14] And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him.

[15] And as he reclined at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners were reclining with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. [16] And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” [17] And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Mark 2:13-17 ESV

One of the brilliant things about poverty as mission shows up here. Jesus wasn’t afraid of the tax man. Since the man Jesus was talking to couldn’t take away anything that Jesus had, Jesus wasn’t afraid to talk to him. Jesus might not have even had the case to be bitter towards what Matthew had taken in the past.

If we fear for our lives, we won’t talk to dangerous people.

If we fear for our wealth, we won’t talk to those that steal.

If we fear for our comfort, we won’t talk to those who impose.

If we fear for our good reputation, we won’t talk to those that are below us.

Huffing Diesel Fumes

Dan Sullivan · December 17, 2015 ·

Like a long clean drug addict, knowing full well they were not the best days, a nerves of steel encounter with a city bus leaves me nostalgic for the adrenaline-mandatory days of going to work in Dushanbe.

Uniformity and Monotony – My TEDxEvansville Talk

Dan Sullivan · December 1, 2015 ·

I had the honor and fun of giving a talk at the inaugural TEDxEvansville. It was a great experience and I got to meet a lot of really neat people. You can view them all at YouTube with the link bit.ly/besttedtalkever or you can watch mine below and get there from the links in it.

You can also Google the phrase “Uniformity and Monotony” and there I am! Of all the things you could rank for, I get that one.

Nehemiah Viewing the Ruins

Dan Sullivan · October 29, 2015 ·

I’m reading through Nehemiah with a group of guys from OneLife West and the thing that hit me yesterday was that Daniel was taken away and the city was destroyed around 605 BC.
Nehemiah was going back and viewing the destruction around 450 B.C. That would be like me going and touring the battle of Gettysburg, but it not being restored until now.

This shows me more than ever that we need to read the Bible in context. Just imagine how overgrown and desolate that broken down wall would have been! Rocks would easily be lost under erosion, entire trees would be growing over boulders that vaguely resembled cut rock for a wall!

Getting Involved

Dan Sullivan · August 20, 2015 ·

These are my notes from one of our community prayer meetings this week. It talks about the things that prevent us from getting involved with others in their situations and struggles. The more we think about sharing life in common, in sharing life together as a community, these things come up and you really are the better person for looking at them and pondering them. To share means to have mutual possesion of something, and none of us lives or dies to our own selves. Think about some of these things when you are given the opportunity to get involved in the lives of your co-workers, your church, your neighborhood, etc.

The guy that spoke was Nick Holovaty, and you can check out his blog over at missionaryjoy.com for more.
