The Lord said to me, “Before I formed you in your mother’s womb I chose you. Before you were born I set you apart. I appointed you to be a prophet to the nations.”
I answered, “Oh, Lord God , I really do not know how to speak well enough for that, for I am too young.”
The Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ But go to whomever I send you and say whatever I tell you. Do not be afraid of those to whom I send you, for I will be with you to protect you,” says the Lord .
Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, “I will most assuredly give you the words you are to speak for me. ’
When Jeremiah was called to be a prophet, he accidentally followed in the path of Moses, David, and other people who have faithfully followed God. He didn’t think he was good enough to do it and he didn’t think it was a good choice.
If you do a word search for the phrase “who am I” it comes up a lot throughout God’s career of calling unsuspecting people.
But look at how God justifies His choice:
- I’ve known you for a long time
- I created you
- I’ve set you apart as special
- I’m God, and I didn’t make a mistake when I appointed you
- I will be with you
- I will protect you
At this point, we don’t know what’s going to happen or what Jeremiah is going to do, but if somebody knew him that well, he’d be a fool to not trust them, wouldn’t he?
You know how you kind of don’t trust those high school marching band kids when they wash your car? Sure, it’s a $10 donation or whatever, but are they going to wash that thing or just play with sponges and hoses?
One time I took my Camry to one of those car washes and a band mom said, “Is this a 96? I put your car together!” And from that moment the mom started telling all of those baritone players about my car. She knew the side panels and the vent for the defrost. She pointed out something about the fenders and the bumpers and I just stepped out of their way.
To her, that was the most valuable car she washed that day.
The God who created you and knew you while your eyeballs were being assembled knows your value. He cares a lot about you and if some distracted saxophone player scratches your clear coat, He’ll still be there to take care of you. He’ll only drive you down dusty gravel roads if it’s for His glory , which is the best thing for you, too.
We can trust God just like we think Jeremiah should have. We might not see God reach out His hand to our mouths, but we see Him support us through the people around us that are also loving Jesus and living for God.
He has redeemed us and we are His. He loves to interact and participate in life with us.
