11 Wail, O inhabitants of the Mortar!
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. Crossway Bibles, 2016, p. Zep 1:11–13.
For all the traders are no more;
all who weigh out silver are cut off.
12 At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps,
and I will punish the men
who are complacent,
those who say in their hearts,
‘The LORD will not do good,
nor will he do ill.’
13 Their goods shall be plundered,
and their houses laid waste.
Though they build houses,
they shall not inhabit them;
though they plant vineyards,
they shall not drink wine from them.”
I looked up this word – complacent – and it has to do with the solidified dregs after making wine.
It has to do with being congealed or curdled. As in, stuff that doesn’t move and just sits, that’s full of garbage and waste, like cold gravy.
These men say in their hearts that God doesn’t do anything good or bad. God isn’t involved. God is passive. In their foolish passivity, they have put their own moods and laziness on God.
Everything they have, God is going to take away. The priests aren’t acting like priests, the men aren’t acting like men.
They are like cold gravy that nobody wants, especially God.
