The Holy Spirit and Plain Ole Elizabeth

Dan Sullivan · February 21, 2011 ·

I’ll tell you what, the more I read the bible, the more I think Christianity is just broken.

Luke 1:41-44 ESV
41 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit,42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!43 And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.

So the Holy Spirit comes upon Elizabeth and she doesn’t drop into some kind of eye-roll trance, she doesn’t speak uncontrollably (though she does speak in a loud voice) and she doesn’t talk like she’s the voice of God. She talks about herself (amazed) and about Mary and the children in their wombs.

I’ve been around some real kooks that claimed to be full of the Holy Spirit and around others that would have never claimed such but you could feel it coming off of them like heat off a gas grill.

I like the last verse here: Luke 1:45 And blessed is she who believed that there would bet a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.”

Blessed are all who believe what God says! Woot!
