Equal Connections of Preachers and Waiters

Dan Sullivan · August 8, 2011 ·

In Acts 6, there begins to be a controversy over dividing up the money to care for the widows. The Greek widows aren’t getting equal care to the Jewish widows.

Acts 6:2

So the twelves called the whole group of the disciples together and said, “It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to wait on tables.

This is one of those tricky spots where people argue about whether the book of Acts is the way we should be or just an account of how the apostles were. It’s funny though, because this verse kind of rubs me the wrong way. It seems kind of cocky or arrogant for them to say “we can’t neglect the word of God to wait tables” when giving food to the poor and the widows was CORE to a lot of the things that Jesus had taught them.

But then look at the requirements/credentials for the guys they chose!

Acts 6:3

But carefully select from among you, brothers, seven men who are well-attested, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this necessary task.

So Peter and the guys don’t want to be neglect the word of God for waiting tables, but the people they chose to take on the job were pretty heavy hitters. “well attested, full of the Spirit and of Wisdom” etc.

The guys they chose were mostly greek, which would have made the people happy that were complaining that the greeks were being treated unfairly. You also have to notice, if you know what happens in the next chapter, that the first one on the list is Stephen…

Acts 6:5

The proposal pleased the entire group, sot they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, with Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a Gentile convert to Judaism from Antioch.

It doesn’t take long and Stephen gets arrested. You can read the whole account in Acts 6:8 through to Acts 7.

What is amazing is that this waiter is next on the list of people being brought before the priests and being questioned! He’s the guy that they say “has a face like an angel” and goes on to be the first follower of Jesus killed for his faith.

It just goes to show that everyone, from the least (waiters for widows) to the greatest (Peter & co. dedicating their time to the Word of God) need to be ready to give an answer and explanation for what they do. Every part of the Body of Christ needs to be equally connected to Jesus. Everyone needs to be equally in contact and in life with Him, because every one of us is an equal example of His life in the world.

What do we do with this bucket?

Dan Sullivan · March 18, 2011 ·

John 4:28 NET

Then the woman left her water jar, went off into the town and said to the people…

So many times people focus on the woman leaving the jar like she didn’t care about water anymore because she now had the living water.

and that’s fine

But what are we going to do with that bucket/jar now? NONE of the disciples would want to touch it! If a dog ate off a plate, they would wash it and use it for people. If a Samaritan ate off of the same plate, it would be smashed to bits because it was so defiled that no self-respecting or God-fearing Jew would eat off of it!

So there is Jesus, who has been talking to the Samaritan woman. There are the disciples, that had a rough search around the area to find some Kosher food to eat. (either they had to leave Samaria or find some outcast Jew that lived in Samaria ((no way))). And they have that bucket that nobody wants to touch.

The great thing is when that woman comes back from town, they are all going to be invited to stay with the Samaritans and they are going to eat and drink off of their stuff for TWO DAYS!

Get ready boys. You wandered around Samaria on your own (they would have surely never been there before) and then you saw Jesus talking to a woman alone and then you had to deal with an abandoned Samaritan water bucket and NOW you’re gonna be their guest for 2 days. I love it.

Jesus busts us completely out of our rules, prejudice, customs, and lifestyle to focus on doing what He is living breathing doing inside of us.

Downgrading and Upgrading Speech

Dan Sullivan · January 23, 2008 ·

I think more and more if you call someone by the most respectable title you can think of for them it will be easier to serve them. listen<<This came out of a conversation I had where at the beginning of the conversation I referred to someone as “A big black guy” and by the end of the conversation I referred to him as “The nice African-American man”He deserved to be treated with respect from the beginning, and I’m not sure why I downgraded him as I spoke of him, but I was glad that I saw what I was saying and upgraded him as I continued to speak.>>¬†
