Spurgeon quoted by Dale Beaver: The Hard To Pull Bow

Dan Sullivan · November 18, 2012 ·

This was in Dale Beaver’s sermon from 11/18/12 at CFC. We weren’t there on Sunday, but I listened to some from the atrium as my 3rd son practiced being a ring bearer at a friend’s wedding. The next morning I tuned in via YouVersion Live and read this quote:

“We cannot draw the bow of prayer alone. Sometimes a bow of steel is
not broken by our hands, for we cannot even bend it; and then the Holy
Ghost puts his mighty hand over ours, and covers our weakness so that
we draw; and lo, what splendid drawing of the bow it is then! The bow
bends so easily we wonder how it is; away flies the arrow, and it
pierces the very center of the target, for he who giveth has won the
day, but it was his secret might that made us strong, and to him be
the glory of it.”
-C H Spurgeon, The Holy Spirit’s Intercession

I read that to the boys and they thought it was cool. They can relate to having a bow that is too hard to pull.

They also immediately related it to Hawkeye’s move in the Avengers, when he shoots an arrow behind him and wipes out a Chitari. They seem to really understand how the Holy Spirit works, in a elementary school way.

Sometimes the thing we are praying for looks like the main thing, the right thing-even, that we should be focussed on. Drawing to God with thanksgiving, surrender, and openness is what focuses our aim in the right direction, and moves God to blast the target for His glory.

My Notes from CFC, 11-4-12 Dale Beaver on Intimacy

Dan Sullivan · November 6, 2012 ·

Dale has been going through a series on the Trinity entitled “TriUnity”.

This Sunday I really noticed how much the 15 minutes before I walk into church color everything. I had my two littlest guys (ages 5&2) grabbing and screaming while I dropped them off in their class. I’m still wondering about this whole “Daddy is going to dump you off with strangers while he goes and learns about Jesus.” thing, but that is a discussion for another blog entry. Here are my notes.

Dale had some good points on what REAL intimacy is. It’s not about sex and lingerie and all of that nonsense. Like so many other things, the world has taken that word and shallowed it. Intimacy is being known as deeply and truthfully as possible. If you don’t have some brothers and sisters that you are close enough that they know you well, go find some! Pray that God would fulfill Psalm 68:6 “God sets the lonely in families.”

The other good take-away was his statement on the Trinity, “I don’t have to know it completely, but I do have to know it truthfully.” This applies to SO MANY things in Christianity. People often bail when things get too complicated or too heady. That can be ok, as long as they bail with a right understanding and not bend the words of Christ to suit their own ways. I know I’ll be using that line this week at the mission.

I love it that the guys were fully redeemed, but they didn’t really get it fully until Jesus served them some food.
Here is the video so you can watch it yourself. You can also follow @DaleBeaver or @onlinecfc on twitter.

Notes from CFC May 6, 2012 : Prodigal Sons

Dan Sullivan · May 7, 2012 ·

Here are my notes from Christian Fellowship Church. The real experience is to visit the olive tree arts juried art show in the lobby, read the Luke 15 text, then come in to worship & hear the sermon.

I’ll add a link to the sermon when they post it.

Sermon notes from 3-11-2012 at CFC

Dan Sullivan · April 17, 2012 ·

I just came across these notes & realized that I forgot to post them.

The opening of this sermon was great. I never thought about Lazarus and Jesus talking to each other in Heaven for a bit before Lazarus came back and talked to Jesus at his old house!
