Looking at Rodin's "Gates of Hell"

February 17, 2005 by Dan Sullivan

So last night I had about 10 minutes to look at a statue called "the Gates of Hell" by Rodin. It is the full sculpture of which "The Thinker" is the main part.

here’s what I wrote in my notebook.

From a distance it looks like a great place to be, lots of naked men and women all passionately holding on to each other, children reaching and running and being held by their parents.

But a closer look shows the truth – they are all holding each other so that while all wish to leave, none ever will.
