Let Your Savory Light Shine

[13] “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.

[14] “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. [15] Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. [16] In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

There is a current month-long prayer event for our entire Tri-state area. It is called Awaken Evansville but it isn’t just for Evansville. You can go here to sign up and join in. You’ll get names of your neighbors emailed to you every day so you can pray for them by name.

One cool feature is that you can see a map of the area and “lights” are shown in neighborhoods to show where people have already signed up. It calls people lights because as people praying for their neighbors, that is what they are.

People love to see people do good things. It inspires us. It makes us share feel-good memes on social media. There is something next-level about living life as a city on a hill or a lamp on a stand. At that point they don’t become novelties. You suddenly don’t need to tell everyone about it or share the memory on Instagram.

There is a tipping point where letting your light shine becomes a lifestyle, and you worship God when someone gives credit to God for your good deeds.

That is the difference between bland nasty chips and that one hot chip that you know you shouldn’t have eaten but it was so salty and yummy. Sure, salt was a preservative, blah blah blah, but this week, after Super Bowl Sunday snacks and the big sale on chips, let’s savor salt as yummy. (See what I did there?)

Light on a stand, a strong city on a hill, and salt on your chips all have something in common: they are attractive. Let us be that light and that salt so that people walking in death, blandness, and darkness desire what we have.

There are plenty of worldviews out there offering what they have and ours is the best.

Show it off.
